Is business class worth it? An honest cost breakdown

We priced 240 long-haul fares out of Lisbon across a year. The premium isn't what most people assume, and it moves in ways you can genuinely plan around.

The number everyone quotes is wrong

Ask most people what business class costs and they'll say 'about four times economy'. That's the peak-season, book-late, flagship-carrier number. It is a real number. It is also the worst one available, and it's not the one you have to pay.

Across the 240 Lisbon long-haul fares we tracked through 2025, the median business-class premium over the cheapest economy fare on the same route and date was 2.8×. The tenth percentile — shoulder season, booked eight to ten months out, on a one-stop Gulf or Turkish carrier — was 1.9×.

Where the premium actually collapses

  • Shoulder season. The single biggest lever, and it's not close. Economy fares hold up in shoulder season far better than business fares do, so the multiple compresses from both directions.
  • One-stop over direct. TAP's direct Lisbon–New York and Lisbon–São Paulo products carry a scarcity premium, because they are the only non-stops in the market. Route via a hub and the business fare frequently drops 25–35% for an arguably better experience — two shorter legs and a shower in the middle.
  • Booking eight to ten months out. Business inventory opens cheap and ratchets. Unlike economy, it very rarely comes back down.
  • Premium economy as the actual answer. On a 14-hour sector, premium economy delivers perhaps 60% of the comfort benefit for around 25% of the premium. For most people, on most routes, this is the right answer and nobody wants to hear it.

The question isn't whether business class is worth four times economy. It's whether it's worth twice economy, booked nine months out, in October. That's a completely different conversation.

The honest case against

We talk clients out of business class regularly, and here's the reasoning we use.

If you're going for two weeks or more, the flight is under 4% of your trip. Spending 60% of your budget on 4% of the experience is a defensible choice if the money is genuinely spare, and a bad one if it means a compromised hotel for a fortnight. We would rather put you in premium economy and a substantially better room.

If you sleep well on planes — and some people simply do — the marginal benefit is far smaller than the marginal price. The lie-flat bed is most of what you're paying for.

The honest case for

If you're landing and working within 24 hours, it stops being a luxury and starts being an operating expense. Every corporate client we have worked this out years ago.

If you're over about 190cm, or you have a back that objects to fourteen hours in a fixed position, the calculus changes entirely. This isn't indulgence — it's the difference between arriving and arriving functional.

And on a milestone trip that took a decade to arrange, the flight is part of the trip. We're not going to pretend otherwise.

This is the sort of thing we do all day.
